Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro,
another major shopping center is dominated by the giant Seibu and
Tobu department stores. This is an area of smart showrooms and a
masslve skyscraper that was once the highest building in Japan.
Office workers, students and shoppers from the suburbs mingle to
create an everyone-friendly atmosphere. Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space
to the west of the station presents concerts and theatrical performances
and boasts remarkable escalators.
Sunshine City
Built on the site once occupied by Tokyo Prison(or
Sugamo prison, famous as the main incarceration facility of Japanese
war criminals), the Sunshine City complex includes a 60 story building
topped by SunShine 60 Observatory at 240 meters. The Bunka Kaikan
building houses the Ancient Orient Museum, although this is not
a major attraction for tourists.
Featurng 20000 species of fish and billed as the world's highest
aquarium, Sunshine International Aquarium is on the 10th floor of
the World lmport Mart Building. On the 2nd and 3rd floors is an
indoor theme park, Namco Nanja Town, a popular spot for young couples
and worth the money if you have got a free afternoon with nothing
to do. Rounding out this all-round complex are exhibition halls,
a culture center a planetarium, restaurants, hundreds of shops,
a branch of Mitsukoshi Department Store, and a Prlnce Hotel. 8 min
walk from JR/subway Ikebukuro Stn; 3min walk from subway Higashi
Ikebukuro Stn.
Toyota Auto Salon Amlux
An ultra high tech automobile museum and showroom
on six foors. Exhibits include Toyota sports cars, new models and
concept cars. Audio-visual presentatons feature holograms, 3-D effects,
robots, vibrations.and aromas.
Open 11:00-20:00. Closed Mon and late Dec to early Jan. Admisson
free. 10min walk from East Exit of JR/subway lkebukuro Stn. 7min
from No 2 Exit of subway Higashi-Ikebukuro Stn
